Spec-Driven Development (SDD), explained
Why the specification is the source of truth when AI agents help write code.
Spec-Driven Development (SDD) is a way of building software in which the specification —not the code— is the starting point and the reference for validating the result.
Why it matters with AI agents
When AI agents generate code, quality depends on how clear the assignment is. An ambiguous instruction produces ambiguous results. A precise specification, with acceptance criteria, reduces rework and leaves a trail of what was requested and why.
The stages
- Specification: requirements, constraints and acceptance criteria written in a verifiable way.
- Technical plan: architecture, components and decisions, with their reasons.
- Tasks: work split into small pieces that can be traced back to the specification.
- Assisted implementation: agents generate the code for each task, and people review it.
- Verification: automated tests and review against the original specification.
What your team gains
- Fewer misunderstandings between business and technology.
- Safer changes, because the specification is updated first.
- Living documentation that accompanies the system.
- Human control at every stage.
When it makes sense
SDD adds the most value in projects with changing requirements, in the modernization of legacy systems, and in teams that already use coding assistants and want more discipline and traceability.
